Why to take the TOEFL Test?

Test of English as a Foreign Language Test intended to assess English Language proficiency of Test-takers who are non-native English speakers, and intend to study in institutions where medium of instruction is English. TOEFL Test particularly evaluates Test-takers ability in four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.

Significance of TOEFL iBT Test:

Test content of TOEFL iBT:

The TOEFL iBT is comprised of 4 English-Language sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. While taking the Test, students will perform tasks in the combination of these 4 English-Language sections, such as:

  • Reading, Listening, Speaking in response to a given question, and then Writing.
  • Listening, speaking in response to a given question, Writing, and then Reading
  • Reading, Listening, Writing, and then Speaking in response to a given question

The Total Duration time of TOEFL iBT Test is about to complete within 3 hours/ 180 minutes, additional 30 minutes for check in before the Test.

In Reading and Listening sections of TOEFL iBT Test, additional questions may be comprised but those questions are not included in scores.

These questions aid ETS to:

  • Build Test scores comparable throughout administrations.
  • Decide how these questions work under actual testing provision.
Accents used in Listening and Speaking sections:

While residing abroad, candidates will encounter various accents in native-speakers English-Language from countries like the USA, United Kingdom, Australia, North America, and New Zealand; TOEFL Test intended to examine whether candidates are well-acquainted with these accents which applied in Listening, and speaking sections.

Dates and Test Centers of TOEFL iBT:

The TOEFL iBT Test is offered internationally more than 60 times round the year at ETS recognised Test centers.

In official website of ETS, candidates can search location and date; search option provides most up-to-date information, inclusive of seats availability.

Easy to choose location, but selecting right Test date is arduous because of the Universities/Institutions deadlines. We suggest candidates to select at least 3 to 4 months earlier dates to their admission applications, and as well as time to issue score reports and if required, Retest again.

Applicants’ Registration for TOEFL iBT Test at Test centers is not permitted.

Retest policy:

Test-takers can attain frequently as they wish to retake Tests with at least 3 days to 12 days interval in between the Tests.

Hence, more opportunities for Test takers to meet critical deadlines.

Acceptable Identity Document:
  • The major acceptable primary document in India is a valid passport book with candidates’ Name, Photograph, and Signature. No exceptions included in this policy.
  • If Test takers are below 15 years old are suggested to be accompanied by a parent or authorised guardian age 18 or above, who has to complete and sign a release form at the Test center. Along with the applicants their parent or authorised guardians have to present a valid acceptable Identity card (ID), or else applicants are not authorised to take the Test. Before applicants register their Test, if applicants are unable to satisfy the required ID documents, please contact the office of Testing Integrity.
  • Applicants can provide supplemental Identity Documents in case if Test administrator questions their primary ID documents. Unless applicants’ primary documents aren’t comprised any of their: Name, Photograph, and Signature it is not valid at Test center.
  • Applicants can’t use supplemental Identity Documents to sort out last-name discrepancies. In case if applicants can’t present acceptable ID which includes their signature, they can provide any of two government-issued IDs with their photographs, as long as these provided ID holds same name as they used while registering for Test. Supplemental IDs can be Government-issued Id Card( including photograph, those listed under Acceptable primary ID Documents), student ID card, and Official letter head from applicants pursuing/ pursued educational institution with its official stamp, signature should overlap on their photograph, and applicants’ details such as Name, Date of Birth, and issued date, these letters are valid up to one year from issued date.

Retest policy:

Fees are tentative, change without pre-notice. The above mentioned fees which include Value added or alike taxes are liable to be paid by ETS.

In some regions where jurisdictions are applicable applicants are liable to pay, those taxes are excluded from ETS Fees. Hence, ETS is not liable or responsible for collecting or remitting additional taxes on the applicants’ behalf.

Based on how applicants register for Test, acceptable payment methods vary:

  • Test-takers can make their payments via their ETS account.
  • Through phone call.
  • Send by mail.

Acceptable payments through Credit / Debit Cards :
  • American Express Card, Master Card, and VISA Card are accepted.
  • When applicants make their payments, they can opt to pay in local currencies instead of U.S dollars; this option can be selected at any time before clicking “submit” to process their payments. The system shows accessible local currencies and the Credit Card types which support local currency payment.
Unacceptable kinds of payment:
  • Via cash or demand drafts
  • Through post-dated cheques
  • From any currency other than U.S dollars (for payments not done by credit card /debit card)
  • Via Receipts of bank cheques

Refund Policies:

Applicants must cancel their Test registration four days before their Test date. For example, if candidates Test is on Thursday, candidates must cancel on Sunday. If this happens applicants will receive 50% of their actual fee paid. If ETS cancells a Test administration or applicants’ scores after Test taken, and applicants do not wish to reschedule because they receive a full refund of their Test fee along with travel expenses incurred to get to the Test center. Refunds are in U.S Dollars only.

TOEFL iBT Test Registration through ETS account:

After completion of online registration, applicants will receive confirmation email from ETS with the allotted Test date, allotted time, and Test center location. This information is displayed in their ETS account as well. Ensure to review whether Test center location address, allotted time altered other than initially scheduled via their ETS account one or two days prior to their Test date.

Quickest and simplest way to register TOEFL iBT Test is using their ETS account. Candidates will have benefits through online registration:

  • They get easy and quick access to official Test preparation.
  • Test center location search powered by Google Maps.
  • Candidates have access to register 24x 7 around a year.
  • Applicants can register through their online ETS account just 2 days prior to the Test date but if applicants register from 7days before the Test date, a 40 USD late fee is applicable.
Instructions to create online ETS Account:

Step 1: Create Account — Applicants should enter their information as per ID proof which will be shown at Test center on Test date, generate username, and password than click submit. Applicants must enter at least one kind of Identification document prior registering their Test date, the same ID document can be carried which they used for registration to get verification done without hesitation.

Step 2: Choose nearby location Test Center and Date — Applicants should choose a Test date option to have a glance at available test centers, later they can select the convenient time which works for them.

Step 3: Complete Registration — Applicants should fill the remaining steps than select their score recipients, if they wish, may purchase test preparation and lastly pay for their test.

TOEFL iBT Test Registration by Phone Call:

Applicants must call Regional Registration Center (RRC) respective of their locations. In India, Regional Registration Center (RRC) for Registration of Test, Phone number: 91-124-4147700.

  • Applicants can pay via Credit Card / Debit Card (American Express, Master Card or VISA Card).
  • Before the Test date, applicants can register via phone call until 5:00 pm, relevant local Test center standard time on working days but a 40 USD late fee is applicable if applicants register from 7days before the Test date.
TOEFL iBT Test Registration by Mail:
  • Applicants’ first job is to download and fill out a TOEFL iBT Test Registration Form (PDF).
  • Next mail their filled form along with the payment receipt to appropriate address.

If applicants intend to reschedule or cancel their registration Test date it must be done at least four full days before the Test date.

For instance, if their Test is scheduled on Friday, they must reschedule or cancel on Monday but reschedule fee is applicable of 60 USD and it should be paid prior to the registration of a new appointment.

Cancel their Scores:

At the end of the Test, applicants have an option to cancel their Test scores. Applicants must be careful before cancelling their Test scores.

After completion of their Test, they can have a glance at the unofficial scores of Reading, and Listening sections are scored instantly. Therefore, applicants have a chance to decide whether to accept or reject their scores which give an idea to decide. While making decision keep in mind:

  • Applicants can’t cancel individual sections scores and have remaining sections scores to be reported.
  • Test scores can be cancelled at free of cost, but to reinstate cancelled scores certain fee is applicable.
  • Cancelled Test scores are not received by applicants, designated institutions, and agencies.
Receiving your TOEFL iBT Test scores:

Applicants can view Test scores in their ETS Account around 6 days after their Test date. An e-mail confirmation as well sent from ETS when applicants’ Test score are available, and applicants can access their Test scores, either by their online ETS account or by the TOEFL official app.

Validity of TOEFL iBT Test scores:

TOEFL iBT Test scores are valid for 2 years; since date specified on Test score report. Applicants can download Test results PDF version document and take print from their relevant ETS account within 8 days from the Test date. If applicants have any queries regarding their score reports, they can contact TOEFL Services.

  • Applicants can request a copy of their Test score reports by Mail before taking the Test; within 11 days after their Test date, it will be mailed.
How Scores are sent to Recipients?

Designated recipients receive official score reports electronically from ETS as soon as 6 days after applicants’ Test date. Approximately 11days after their Test, score reports will be sent by Mail.

If applicants wish to have their Cancelled scores which can be reinstated within 60 days after their Test date, they must request ETS with a payment of 20USD to reinstate. Reinstatement can be requested in any one of two ways:

  • From their ETS account, either through online or by the TOEFL Official Application.
  • By filling and returning the reinstate Request form(PDF)
Request a Score Review:

After the Test date, applicants can review their Writing section and/or speaking section within 30days. The fee payment charge for each section is 80 USD; to review both sections costs 160 USD. Review can be done only once. Please consider that if applicants opted designated institutions/ agencies to receive their score reports, they can’t request a score review of their Speaking section and/or writing section; both.

Score request can be done in any one of two ways:

  • From their ETS account, either through online or by the TOEFL Official Application.
  • By filling and returning the TOEFL iBT Score Review Request form (PDF)
  • ETS will report applicants’ Test scores from 1-3 weeks after their request and payment received.
Different ways to send Score Reports to Institutions/ Agencies:

Prior to Test:

Applicants can select up to 4 designated institutions / agencies to receive their TOEFL iBT Test scores which are included in registration fee itself no additional fee required. Score recipients are added and deleted from their ETS account, either by online or through Official Application, until 10 pm (local Test center Time) prior to their Test date.

Score request can be done in any one of two ways:

After completion of the Test:

TOEFL Test scores are valid up to 2 years. During that time, applicants can arrange additional score report copies for a fee of 20 USD per each institution in the below mentioned ways:

  • Through their ETS account
  • By Fax
  • By Postal Mail
How TOEFL iBT Test is scored?

The Official Test Center never measures Test scores, the centralized scoring network assess the applicants Test scores. Both the Reading and Listening sections are assessed by computer-based network. While Speaking and Writing sections are assessed by a blend of Automated Artificial Intelligence(AI) scoring and multiple of extremely well trained human raters:

  • Assess exact and complete picture of applicants’ ability
  • Minimise partial assessment which occurs in face to face interviews

How TOEFL Ibt scores are assessed?
